Photochromic lenses are mostly used by people who are mainly exposed to the UV rays of the sun. The color of the lenses changes from light to dark depending upon its exposure to the sun. Previously one could choose only among glass lenses but today one can even choose from plastic lenses. There are various names given to these Photochromic lenses such as Transitions, Reactolite, Reactions and even known as Graduations. But in totality these lenses are known as photo chromic lenses. But the name Transition is a brand name of the photochromic lenses. The photochromic lenses from Transition are the most advanced lenses but there are many lenses available in the markets which are also very advanced in technology. The photochromic lenses are made for the protection of your eyes from the UV rays of the sun and practically clear. These lenses can produce a tint effect depending upon the amount of UV rays falling on them. The tint effect is more on a bright sunny day as the UV rays present is more and similarly on a dull day these photochromic lenses can change its color to a pale tint as the UV rays present is not much. Again when you come back to your house and you are inside then these lenses again become clear. The basic idea behind these photochromic lenses are that they should provide protection against the harmful UV rays of the sun and also from the changing effect of the sunlight. But you should remember that while you are outside the car these lenses tend to tint more whereas when you are inside the car the tinted effect is not much as the windscreen of the car does provide UV protection.
The two most popular types of photochromic lenses are Transition lenses and Reactolite lenses. Transition lenses are available in various forms such as in Standard Plastic, Poly Carbonate, 1.6 and 1.67 lenses. These lenses are made from very advanced technology and are the very fast to react to the UV rays of the sun. They take not more than 30 seconds to react and it is within this short span of time that they even get clear. Reactolite is another brand name of glass photochromic lenses. These lenses take a longer time than the transition lenses to react and are much heavier than those lenses. But the plus point of these lenses is that they are much more effective when someone is driving a car. But most of the time it is seen that transition lenses are much widely used as the comfort provided by these lenses is immense.

Transition Lenses
Transitions is actually a brand name of a Photocromic Lens. Although transitions are probably the most advanced photochromic lens on the market there are many others out there.
People call Photochromic lenses by all different kinds of names such as Transitions, and I’ve even heard them called Graduations. However, they are all Photo chromic lenses.
Photochromic lenses are clear lenses that react with UV and produce a tint effect based on the amount of UV present.
When wearing Photochromic lenses even a dull day some reaction will occur producing a very pale tint and then on a very bright day where more UV is present they will turn quite dark. When wearing them indoors they will become clear.
The idea behind photochromic lenses is that they will provide the correct amount of protection for the varying light conditions you experience. However, when driving, your car windscreen will block a certain amount of UV which is required to make the lens react so they will not work as well as they would outside of the car.
Transitions Lenses
Transitions are available in Standard Plastic, Poly Carbonate, 1.6 and 1.67 Lenses. They are the fastest reacting lens on the market and will react into sunglasses within 30 seconds. However, they will take longer than that to go clear again when you go inside.
In most cases the Transitions lens is the preferred option due to the over all comfort and performance.
Photocromic lenses are ideal in the sense that they can save you having to purchase two pairs of glasses ie, Clear glasses and a pair of Sunglasses.

Photochromatic lenses have the property that they automatically darken on exposer to ultra-violet rays. The amount of darkness depends upon the intensity of light. If light is very strong, photochromatic lenses become almost opaque. When wearer of photochromatic lens comes to indoor, lenses comeback to their original color and darkness disappears.
In other words the photochromatic lenses have the property to control light falling on eyes by changing its darkness and hence unable the wearer to see comfortable in any intensity of light. All photochromatic lenses block 100% of ultra-violet light. Photochromatic lenses are also called photochromic lenses.
Building Blocks
The substances responsible for photochromatic property of a lens are microcrystalline silver halides (usually silver chloride). These substances embed into glass version of lenses to make them photochromatic. Photochromatic lens contains millions of silver halides crystals. When exposed to sunlight, UV rays transform the crystals into light-absorbing particles. As these particles absorb light, the lens darkens and the amount of light passing through the lens is reduced.
When the lenses are removed from sunlight and the stimulating UV radiation is no longer present, the crystals return to their original orientation and the lenses become clear. Plastic lenses depends upon organic photochromatic molecules for their reversible darkening. The main reason these lenses darken in the sunlight and not in indoors is that indoor does not contain ultraviolet rays. The Photochromatic lenses come back to their original color due to thermal process. Because of this reason some lenses don’t work well in hot temperatures.
More on Photochromatic lenses.
The transition lenses are today most popular photochromatic lenses. Transition lenses are manufactured by transition optical. Transitions applies a thin layer of photochromatic particles in front of the surface of lenses instead of distributing light-sensitive particles throughout the lens material. The light sensitive material penetrate lens evenly and up to depth of 0.15 millimetres.
