Sunglasses – How to Choose the Right Color Lenses For Your Sport or Motorcycle Sunglasses

The most important feature to consider when buying sunglasses is the quality of the lenses. Although sunglasses are instrumental in providing a certain stylish appearance, their main safety feature is protection from the sun’s UV rays. Many people mistakenly think that certain lens colors are related to the ability to block UV radiation. This is not at all true. Lenses for sunglasses are coated with chemicals that block UV radiation during the manufacturing process long before the color is added; however, each lens color does contribute a distinct function that may enhance your vision during a particular outdoor activity. Gray, yellow/orange, green, amber/brown, and rose/red are the color tints used.

Gray lenses, also referred to as smoke lenses, are the most common neutral color lenses. Mirrored sunglasses are also considered to be in this category. They allow the eyes to see colors in their truest form, reduce brightness and glare, and are often worn by golfers and bikers.

Yellow and Orange lenses are good in hazy, foggy, or low light conditions because they increase contrast. Although these colors make objects appear brighter and sharper, they also distort colors so bikers, cyclist, and drivers should be aware of this when approaching traffic lights. The yellow lenses are great for snow activities.

Green lenses filter blue light and reduce glare, thus adding high contrast and visual sharpness. By filtering the blue light these lenses tend to reduce eyestrain in bright light. Golfers and baseball players often wear green lenses.

Amber/Brown lenses, like green lenses, reduce glare and block blue light, giving them the ability to brighten vision on cloudy days. By blocking blue light, these tints increase contrast and visual acuity. Amber and brown lens are often worn during fishing, baseball, golf, hunting, cycling, and water sports.

Rose and red lenses increase contrast by blocking blue light. These lenses are known to be soothing to the eyes and to help with visibility while driving. Because they reduce glare and eyestrain rose and red lenses are worn often by computer users.

Alternatively, there some brands, like Bobster Eyewear and Survial Optics Sunglasses, that offer Interchangeable eyewear (sunglasses and goggles) that allows users to tailor lens color for ambient light conditions. The eyewear comes with 2 to 4 lens pairs of lenses packaged in one unit. Lenses are tinted in smoked grey, amber or yellow, clear, or smoked reflective (mirrored).
