People who wear prescription glasses will be wearing an eyeglass with thick lens. It is generally said that those people are bookish and they are not fashion conscious. But many people who wear prescription glasses also wish to look trendy. The trendy eyewear must have a thinner lens. When you are able to reduce the thickness of your eyewear then you will feel confident that you have also achieved the trendy look. When you tint your lens with a cool color then nobody will believe that you are wearing prescription glass.
To achieve this fashionable look, you may use high index plastic lenses in your eyeglass. These lenses will have a higher index of refraction. The conventional prescription lenses are determined by the index of refraction and the curvature of the lens. The index of refraction refers to the ability of the lens material to bend the light ray. If the rays are bent by the lens, then curvature will be less. When the curvature is less, thin lenses can be made. Since high index plastic lenses bend light rays, their curvature is less and hence they can be made thin.
High index lenses are available with different indices as 1.70, 1.66, 1.60 and so on. When the number is large, the lens will be thin. Their tensile strength is also high and they can be used in drill mounted eyeglasses.
Every coin has two sides. They are certain disadvantages with the high index lenses. When the index is high more and more light is reflected off the surfaces. This leads to the decrease in the amount of light that is transmitted to the lenses. An ordinary plastic lens whose index is 1.498 reflects 8% of the light and allows the rest to pass through the lens. A high index lens whose index is 1.70 reflects 13.6% thus offering more resistance to the light that is transmitted through the lens.
Lenses that are made up of high index plastic tend to cause dispersion of light. When white light is passed through a high index lens, then it will break into its component colors. Due to this property you may find a color hue around certain images when you use eyeglasses made of high index plastic. This phenomenon is called chromatic aberration. This color hue tends to increase as you move your eyeballs away from the center of the lens. This effect can be avoided by the use of frames which are smaller in size. You will need one day to get your eyes adapted to eyeglasses with high index lenses.
Apart from minor flaws, the high index lenses are sure to offer you a trendy look. Seek the advise from your optician to carefully choose the index of the lens for a clear vision.
