Choosing Sunglasses for Children

It is a major concern for parents to protect their children from all possible harmful things in the world around. Thus we always think about protecting our child’s eyes from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun in the same way as you may want to protect their skin from getting sunburn. The UV rays of the sun are so harmful that they can damage the retina and the lens of your eyes. This may also lead to cataracts, macular degeneration and skin cancer in the adjacent areas of your eyes in the later stages of their life. Whenever you see that your son is spending a lot of time outside in the sun you should make them wear sunglasses at any age. Age is not the criteria as even infants can wear sunglasses. Here we will discuss some effective tips which can help you the best pair of sunglasses for your child.

The first thing necessary is to get a pair of sunglasses which enables you to protect your eyes very well and can absorb at least 99% ultraviolet rays of the sun. It is not necessarily that if you want to go for a good pair of sunglasses it will be expensive. You have to check out the UV blocking capacity of the sunglasses and for this you have to see the label marked on it. They can be labeled as follows:

·         Will block 99% of the UV rays.

·         The UV absorbing capacity is up to 400 nm.

·         It meets the ANSI UV requirements or is meant for special purpose.

If you are not sure whether the existing sunglasses of your child have enough UV protection then you get the pair of sunglasses tested from an optician. If you think that the darker the pair of glasses the more is the UV rays absorbed them, you are wrong. A chemical is applied on the lens of the sunglasses which help in absorbing the rays of the sun. You should realize that polarized lenses or mirrored lenses are UV protected if it is marked on them otherwise no. Lenses which are large and close to the surface of your eyes provide best protection and non breakable frames and lenses are the best choice for the children. It is very necessary for the guardians to choose a pair of glasses for the children as children tend to pick up glasses that they find attractive. In case your child has a vision problem you can make them wear prescription sunglasses. It is dangerous to look directly at the sun even after wearing sunglasses so you should make sure that your child never looks at the sun directly specially within 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
