There are three different levels of eye emergencies, so the action you take will depend on what level of emergency you are facing. You need to assess the emergency quickly so that your action will be prompt and effective.

1. True eye emergencies – call for immediate treatment within seconds or minutes.
2. Urgent emergencies – need some sort of diagnosis and treatment within 1 or 2 hours.
3. Semi-urgent eye emergencies – require treatment within days or weeks

Examples of True Eye Emergencies

· Chemical burns when acidic or other burning chemicals enter the eye
· Cuts when objects enter and pierce the eye
· Retinal artery occlusion which is an abrupt but painless loss of vision when the main artery to the retina is blocked

How to Treat True Eye Emergencies

If you are experiencing a true eye emergency, DO NOT:
· Apply pressure to an eye which has a foreign object in it or a cut on it
· Remove a contact lens or other object in the eye
· Touch or rub the eye

If you can’t get medical attention immediately, cover the eye with a bandage, eye shield, or paper cup taped in position.

To treat chemical burns, flush the eye with water right away and repeat every 15 minutes. Don’t put anything else into the eye and go to the nearest emergency room.

Do not try to treat retinal artery occlusion yourself. Go to the nearest emergency room.

Examples of Urgent Eye Emergencies

· Cellulitis – eye socket infection which causes inflammation and pain
· Corneal abrasion – scratch on the cornea caused by foreign object(s) in the eye
· Corneal ulcer – little painful sore on the cornea
· Endophthalmitis – infection in the interior of the eye which causes abrupt, extreme eye pain and impairment of vision
· Foreign object in the eye – may penetrate the eyeball
· Glaucoma – unexpected increase in pressure in the eyeball, causing reduced vision and pain
· Hyphema – bleeding into the front chamber of the eye, often due to blunt trauma
· Iritis – inflammation in the front chamber of the eye which results in redness and light sensitivity
· Lid laceration – cut on either the upper or lower eyelid or both
· Retinal detachment or tear – the retina becomes torn or detached causing flashing lights, “floaters” (spots on the eye), or shadows covering a portion of the visual field

For treatment of any of the above urgent eye emergencies, visit an urgent care center or a qualified ophthalmologist in the first few hours after noticing the eye emergency.

Examples of Semi-urgent Eye Emergencies

· Broken facial bones – eye socket bone fractures
· Exophthalmos – bulging of the eyeball which looks like staring
· Eye tumors – growths or masses that occur in or next to the eye
· Muscle imbalances – eyes are not aligned with one another
· Optic nerve tumors – growths or masses that occur in or next to the optic nerve
· Optic neuritis – swelling of the optical nerve causing rapid haziness and/or dimness of vision in either eye or both
· Orbit tumors – tumors in the cavity or socket of the skull in which the eye and its appendages are situated.

Treatment of semi-urgent eye emergencies should be sought within a few days to a few weeks (depending on the condition).

Make A Quick and Easy Home Remedy For Pink Eye

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common ailment caused by several different factors. Pink eye may come on because of stress to the small nerves in the eye, or because of a bacterial or viral infection.

Infectious pink eye can spread like a wildfire to those around you. Since so many people get this disease, it is no wonder that so many people want an effective home remedy for pink eye. There are a number of simple techniques to get rid of this condition.

Homeopathic Remedy
The homeopathic remedy Calcarea carbonicum, used once per day for three days, can help clear up some cases, particularly in infants who are suffering from other symptoms, like constipation and heavy sweating.

On the other hand, if you have got severe symptoms that came out of nowhere, a remedy like Belladonna might be more effective.

Give Your Eye A Bath
Eye baths are a common home remedy for pink eye, too. There are a number of different infusions and solutions used to combat the condition. Commonly, they are either applied as eyewash or with cotton balls.

Remember to always use a fresh eye bath solution and fresh clean tools to apply it, since the bacteria that cause pink eye breeds quickly and are extremely contagious.

Some eye baths include an infusion of eyebright or goldenseal, three times per day, eyewashes containing a teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of water or a tablespoon of boric acid to one quart of water (be sure to use sterile water), and warm or tepid milk.

Drop Your Way To Clear Eyes
Other remedies are put directly in to the eye as eye drops. Colloidal silver is a natural antibiotic that has been in use for over a century.

Honey has antibacterial properties, and if it is unpasteurized, antibiotic properties. It will soothe the injured eye and help it heal if applied as an eye drop.

One drop of Castor oil in the eye three times per day is also said to be an effective home remedy for pink eye.

Can You Smell That?
Aromatherapists suggest the use of warm compresses containing either chamomile, lavender, or rose oil to fight pink eye.

Use a few drops on a warm cloth and apply the cloth to the eyes until it cools. These oils are believed to promote healing and help draw infection out of the eye. They can usually be obtained at a natural foods store.

Tea Time
Since tea contains bioflavonoids that can help to ward off infection and reduce inflammation, many people use moist or partially used teabags as a home remedy for pink eye by placing the tea bag over their eye.

Eyebright tea, green tea, or black tea can all be used for this purpose. Repeat this treatment several times a day. Teas containing tannic acid, such as green and black teas, are also particularly good for soothing the annoying itch that usually comes with pink eye.

Hemorrhoid Cream For Eye Bags?

September 27th, 2007 by statuseyecare

If you have eye bags, you’ve probably heard about this old “remedy” that was endorsed by your own mom or grandmother. Go to the nearest drugstore and grab a tube of Preparation H. This hemorrhoid cream will supposedly get rid of puffy eyes fast.

No one knows who started this silly rumor but it is mentioned in model Diane Iron’s popular book “The World’s Best Kept Beauty Secrets.” Irons claims that many middle-aged celebrities use Preparation H to maintain their youthful looks. Supermodels reportedly swear by it, saying that this hemorrhoid cream gives them an instant lift when they are bothered by eye bags.

Apparently, the people who use Preparation H believe that if it can shrink hemorrhoids, it will also work for bulging eye bags. Promoters claim this is due to two ingredients: shark oil and a live yeast cell derivative called Bio-Dyne Skin Respiratory Factor. But the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) didn’t buy that story and ordered the manufacturer Whitehall-Robbins Inc. to reformulate the product.

At present, US versions of Preparation H no longer carry these ingredients but you’ll still find them in the Canadian and European versions. Instead, the American version has phenylephrine HCI 0.25 % - a vasoconstrictor that some dermatologists said will constrict capillaries and temporarily reduce dark circles and puffy eyes.

Dr. Debra Jaliman, a clinical instructor in dermatology at New York’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine said phenylephrine “tightens facial skin by temporarily constricting blood vessels and shrinking under-eye tissue - the same way it constricts and shrinks rectal blood vessels and tissue.” However, a Whitehall representative said Preparation H is not meant for the eyes and shouldn’t be applied there.

Since the skin around the eyes is thinner, it’s more sensitive and prone to adverse reactions that can occur from the ingredients found in Preparation H. There have been reports of irritation, burning, and itching among others.

“I would not recommend using Preparation H for puffy eyes. Every time I tried it, it burned and I had to rush to the sink and wash it off with cold water. The skin around the eye is very thin and sensitive, unlike the other area Preparation H is used for,” said one user in eHow.com.

“Instead of seeing miracles, all I saw was that my face was turning redder and redder and the pouches under my eyes were getting bigger instead of smaller! Finally, when my face started burning and itching all over, I washed off the darn stuff as fast as I could. For two days, my face was swollen and raw… hardly the results I had expected! Believe me, I was so disappointed by the failure of Preparation H to do what Irons claimed it would do that I vowed never again to use it. Not on my face and certainly not on any other part of my body!” said another disappointed user at MyDoctor2.com.

If you are tormented by eye bags, dark circles, swollen eyes or fine lines and wrinkles, don’t rely on hearsay or your next door neighbor for advice. One product worth looking into is Eyevive, the safe and natural way to reverse the signs of aging. Eyevive moisturizes and strengthens the skin around your eyes to help reduce eye bags, wrinkles, and other skin problems.
