What are progressive lenses and how do they differ from ordinary bifocals?
Progressive lenses feature a continuous, clear field of vision from distance through the mid-range to near without the use of annoying bifocal lines.
Bifocal lenses use very old technology. Abrupt and awkward changes between distance and near prescriptions are separated by annoying lines that can be frustrating to wear.
Who would be a candidate for Varilux progressive lenses?
Anyone who has presbyopia or Long-Arm Eyes™ including current bifocal and trifocal wearers.
Can I expect to have an adaptation period with my Varilux lenses?
Most individuals will learn to use their Varilux lenses right away. Others may take a bit longer to become completely comfortable. Your eye care professional should be made aware of any extended adaptation period. A “fine-tuning” frame adjustment may be all that is necessary to assist in this initial period.
I have a strong prescription. How can I reduce the thickness and weight of my eyeglass lenses?
Varilux lenses are available in a variety of different materials that will reduce both thickness and weight. Smaller frames also reduce lens thickness and weight. Your eye care professional will consider prescription, frame size, and your individual lifestyle when helping you decide which lens material will be best for you.
Do Varilux lenses come with anti-reflective properties?
Varilux lenses are not manufactured with anti-reflective properties. However, your eye care professional can arrange for anti-reflective technology to be incorporated into your Varilux lenses. Crizal anti-reflective lenses reduce the glare that causes eye fatigue. By sharpening visual performance, Crizal helps you see with more clarity.
Do Varilux progressive lenses come with scratch resistance and ultraviolet protection?
Yes. Ask your eye care professional for details.
How do I know that I have received genuine Varilux progressive lenses?
You should receive a Certificate of Authenticity and a Wearing Varilux Guide from your eye care professional when your eyeglasses are dispensed to you.
How can I obtain more information about Varilux lenses?
In addition to the information provided here and elsewhere on this site, Visit Our Showroom “Status Eye Care” to know more about Varilux lenses and their specific applications to your individual prescription and lifestyle.
What additional information will be helpful to me when preparing to discuss Varilux lenses with my eye care professional (ECP)?
If you have not done so within the last year, we suggest you have a complete eye exam prior to ordering your new Varilux lenses. Be sure to bring your current eyeglasses with you; they can provide valuable information to us regarding your previous prescription, lens type and lens material.
Discuss any special activities you engage in that may require a specific lens material or treatment, special frame type or an additional pair of eyeglasses.
It is important to fully understand the warranty provided to you; the warranty on Varilux lenses can vary among eye care professionals.
For Varilux lenses, this engraving is located midway vertically on each lens, in toward the nasal side of the lens. It appears as a small “football” shape, with a lower case letter “e” within the football. Your eye care professional can assist you in locating this engraving.
Additionally, most Varilux lenses are designed with a new technology called Airmark, visible only when you breathe on the front of your lenses or expose them to steam. As the technology availability grows, more Varilux lenses will have the Airmark. If you don’t see the Varilux Airmark, check your authenticity card and cleaning cloth, or talk to your eye care professional to ensure you’ve received authentic Varilux lenses.
My vision feels different with my new Varilux lenses when I look to the side. Is this a normal part of the adaptation period?
Yes. Progressive lenses will introduce some changes to your peripheral vision due to power changes that occur in the periphery of the lenses. You may feel an initial difference in your peripheral vision that will require some slight changes in horizontal head and eye movements. Sensitivity to this area of the lens will diminish with wearing time as you become more accustomed to the lenses.
These guidelines will help you adjust quickly and comfortably:
* Stop wearing your old glasses immediately
* Wear your new glasses high on the bridge of your nose and as close to your face as possible.
* To look at an object, turn your head (and not just your eyes) toward it.
* Move your head vertically until the object glides into focus.
For most, this period of adaptation will be only a few hours. Some individuals may require as much as several days to two weeks to become completely comfortable. If you have been wearing your lenses for this period of time or longer and feel uncomfortable in any way with your vision, contact your eye care professional for an evaluation.
Are there any special guidelines for taking care of Varilux lenses?
As with most lenses, you should wash them with soap and warm water. Then wipe your lenses clean with a soft cloth. Special micro fiber cleaning cloths are available from your eye care professional. These cloths are safe and effective at keeping your lenses clean on the go, when you don’t have easy access to soap and water. And while your lenses usually incorporate a scratch-resistant coating, you should always store your lenses in a case as a precaution. Avoid leaving your lenses in direct sunlight for long periods (like on your dashboard, for instance).
