A crack may allow ultraviolet rays to penetrate the lens and may even focus on to the eye or worse the retina. A crack in the lens should always be repaired if the crack is irreparable the lens should be changed or a whole new pair should be purchased.
Even scratches on the lens may affect the performance of your sunglasses, or if nothing else will lead to the sunglasses not looking as good. If the frames themselves are damaged this can lead to the glasses not fitting correctly or leave them broken and beyond repair.

Types of sunglasses cases
Pocket-style sunglasses – A pocket-style sunglasses case is soft and typically made out of a stiff cloth. This type of sunglasses case is easy to use because one end is typically open, making it convenient to remove and replace the sunglasses when not in use. The disadvantage of this type of sunglasses case, however, is that it provides very little protection against breakage.
Tough sunglasses case – The hard shell of this type of sunglasses case protects your sunglasses from becoming broken, even if you accidentally sit on it or drop it. If you are going to purchase a hard-shell sunglasses case, it is important to be sure your sunglasses fit inside properly. If the sunglasses case is too large, your sunglasses will rattle around inside the case and may still become damaged. Similarly, a sunglasses case that is too small can cause your sunglasses to become smashed when shutting the case.
