Leading eyeware leader Ray-Ban is thinking of roping in junior AB to endorse their sunglasses. In fact, the strategy could materialise with hardly any time having elapsed since the company’s nearest rival Fast-Track started running promotions with the help of John Abraham.

A FIRST FOR RAY-BAN
Interestingly, Ray-Ban has never involved any Indian celebrity to endorse its products so far. “The reason is that the market for premium eye-wear is very small here. At least 90 per cent in the US wear branded sunglasses and 70 per cent in European countries. But, in India, only about 1 per cent of the population uses branded sunglasses, despite everyone knowing that eyes are one of the most delicate and sensitive parts of the body,” Manoj Nayak, Regional Manager (West), Ray-Ban Sun Optics India Limited, told Mumbai Mirror.
Nayak pointed out that this small market limits expenditure on marketing and advertising. “Still, we spend about 15 per cent of our turnover on marketing. But now, with people having ever-increasing disposable incomes and a retail boom, our turnover is growing by about 12 per cent annually,” Nayak said, hinting at the growing budget for advertising.

PIRACY A BIG PROBLEM
Nayak said that Ray-Ban loses about 30 per cent of revenues due to piracy. “Aviator glasses – a cult product for a decade now – are the most pirated glasses!” Nayak said.
The company also claims that the entry of Fast Track has not affected Ray-Ban’s market at all. “In fact, it’s helping us as people are becoming more aware of style. There is no competition as Fast-Track is ranged from Rs 700- 1,700 while Ray-Ban is another price category of Rs 2,400 onwards,” Nayak said.

Additionally, most Varilux lenses are designed with a new technology called Airmark, visible only when you breathe on the front of your lenses or expose them to steam. As the technology availability grows, more Varilux lenses will have the Airmark. My vision feels different with my new Varilux lenses when I look to the side. Is this a normal part of the adaptation period?
Yes. Progressive lenses will introduce some changes to your peripheral vision due to power changes that occur in the periphery of the lenses. You may feel an initial difference in your peripheral vision that will require some slight changes in horizontal head and eye movements. Sensitivity to this area of the lens will diminish with wearing time as you become more accustomed to the lenses.
These guidelines will help you adjust quickly and comfortably:
* Stop wearing your old glasses immediately
* Wear your new glasses high on the bridge of your nose and as close to your face as possible.
* To look at an object, turn your head (and not just your eyes) toward it.
* Move your head vertically until the object glides into focus.
For most, this period of adaptation will be only a few hours. Some individuals may require as much as several days to two weeks to become completely comfortable. If you have been wearing your lenses for this period of time or longer and feel uncomfortable in any way with your vision, contact your eye care professional for an evaluation.
Are there any special guidelines for taking care of Varilux lenses?
As with most lenses, you should wash them with soap and warm water. Then wipe your lenses clean with a soft cloth. Special micro fiber cleaning cloths are available from your eye care professional. These cloths are safe and effective at keeping your lenses clean on the go, when you don’t have easy access to soap and water. And while your lenses usually incorporate a scratch-resistant coating, you should always store your lenses in a case as a precaution. Avoid leaving your lenses in direct sunlight for long periods (like on your dashboard, for instance).

How do Varilux lenses reduce horizontal head movement?
Varilux progressive addition lenses require fewer changes in the wearer’s horizontal head and eye movements.

For example, a non-presbyope looking at an object at intermediate (arms-length) distance, located at a 25º angle from straight ahead vision, can reach it by simply turning the eyes without moving the head.A wearer of non-Varilux progressives (as shown on the left) is only able to turn the eyes by about 13º and the head by an additional 12º to reach the same object. Thus, non-Varilux progressives require significant horizontal head movements. |

With Varilux, head movements are reduced to 6º – only half as much – while the eyes are able to turn 19º. The very gradual and regular distribution of power characteristics in the periphery of the Varilux lens allows for very comfortable vision in a lateral, side-to-side gaze. The Varilux wearer enjoys larger fields of vision with less head movement. |
